As you progress through your Skillcrush program you’ll be learning to use different types of professional software and services. Before you begin, we want to make sure you know what to expect and aren’t surprised by anything as you go!

As you progress through your Skillcrush program you’ll be learning to use different types of professional software and services. Before you begin, we want to make sure you know what to expect and aren’t surprised by anything as you go!
What Type Of Computer Do I Need?
Other than your phone and tablet, almost any laptop or desktop will do!
The only other thing you should make sure is that the computer is running an operating system that’s recent enough that you won’t have trouble installing new versions of the software listed below.
Things you’ll need to be able to do on your computer:
- Access the Internet using a modern web browser such as Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.
- Stream videos (we use Vimeo as our video hosting platform, but as long as you’re able to watch YouTube and Netflix on your computer, you’ll be good to go!)
- Download & install a recent version of Adobe Photoshop. You can view the system specs needed for Adobe Photoshop here.
- Space to install MAMP or XAMPP if you wish to take WordPress courses. MAMP's requirements are here. XAMPP's are here.
Computers that won’t work:
- Chromebooks (or any other low-cost computer that only runs the Internet)
- iPads or other tablets
- Your smartphone (sorry!)
- Any computer you don’t have full administrator permissions to (e.g., a computer at work with security restrictions in place)
MAC VS. PC
Although there are some stereotypes that all techies love Macs, we’re here to tell you Mac computers are ABSOLUTELY NOT REQUIRED for your Skillcrush program or to work in tech. Windows PCs work great (in fact, some members of our team swear by them) and in almost all instances, there’s literally no material difference between the two.

Although there are some stereotypes that all techies love Macs, we’re here to tell you Mac computers are ABSOLUTELY NOT REQUIRED for your Skillcrush program or to work in tech. Windows PCs work great (in fact, some members of our team swear by them) and in almost all instances, there’s literally no material difference between the two.
Cost For Additional Software & Tools
In some instances, use of third-party software or services will cost money above and beyond the tuition you are paying for your Skillcrush program. Below you will find more information about what services you may need to use and how much you can expect to pay for them.
We do our best to minimize costs for our students by providing free alternatives, making sure you are aware of free trials, and offering you discount codes where they are available.
That said, working as a professional in tech does at times mean you have to invest money in tools in order to use those tools to make money. It’s totally annoying! We get it! But it’s just part of the "cost of doing business," as they say.
If the cost of a certain program is prohibitive for you at a given time, don’t worry about it—just do your best with free alternatives and plan to come back to those lessons in the future when you have more money to invest. Remember, you have lifetime access to all of your Skillcrush material, so don’t ever feel pressured to put yourself in a tough financial place just to complete a lesson.
